Round one brought Sydney down to Melbourne for 2 afternoon games. The girls fought hard battles unfortunately coming out with 2 losses, but not for lack of shooting.
Being down 1-0 in the first game already, Sirens first goal came as a penalty shot after Melbourne covered the puck in the crease. Sharna made nice move to backhand the puck past the goalie. After Melbourne's Kristelle Vanderwolf scored to make it 2-1, Krista Korhonen added to the tally tying the game back up. In the second period, Melbourne went up 3-2 after a goal from Carly Rolph before Stephenie Cochrane evened it up with 25 seconds left in the period with a pass from Kath McOnie. The 3rd period saw Melbourne pull away by 3 goals in the last 6 minutes. Sirens Erin Bow added one more to the tally after a pass from Melissa Rulli with 34 seconds left in the game for finalise the score at 6-4. The Sirens played hard, outshot Melbourne 50-28 and had possession for majority of the game, but couldn't capitalize on their chances.
Sunday's game was a battle shot for shot in the first period with both teams letting 8 shots off as a strong start to the game. After killing off a 5 on 3 Sydney came back strong, however Melbourne pulled ahead with goals by Shona Powell, and Georgia Carson. In the second period Sydney battled back with goals from Godfrey (Mconie), and Sandra Giustiniani (Bow) to bring the score back within 1 (Melbourne goal - Alivia Del Basso). But fell behind 4-2 with 11 seconds left before the ice cut (Del Basso). Pulling ahead by yet another goal (Nicole Jones), Melbourne came out strong. A power play goal by Amelia Matheson (Godfrey) was quickly rebutted by another goal from Melbourne (Rolph). Sydney and Melbourne exchanged another set of goals (McOnie from Cochrane & Remi Harvey), (Del Basso from Ralph and Powell) before Sydney added one more last minute tally from Korhonen (Sharnita Crompton) settling the score at 7-5. Again the Sirens outshot the Ice 40-27, but failed to capitalize on their chances. Penalties were a downfall for the girls this weekend.
Across the country, Brisbane played host to Adelaide. Brisbane opened the scoring on Saturday in the 1st with a goal from A. McDonald (V. Watson, B. Parkyn). In the second, Brisbane score two from E. Gray (K. Costa, R. Routledge) and R. Routledge (E. Gray) while Adelaide snuck one in from B. Kavanagh bringing the score to 3-1. 3rd period saw more scoring from both teams with Brisbane scoring 2 coming from K. Costa (Gray, T. Hogutt) and A. Brown (V. Watson) and Adelaide scoring 4, including a final goal with .09 seconds left to tie it up. Kavanagh (K. Harris), N. Atris (Kavanagh, K. Thiema), D. Glass (Atris), and K. Venus (Kavanagh, Glass). Adelaide finished Brisbane off in the shootout.
After Adelaide pulled ahead 3-0 on Sunday, Brisbane bounced back to tie the game at 3 a piece in the third before continuing to a shootout for the 2nd consecutive game. Once again, Adelaide proved stronger, pulling off their second shootout win of the season.
